Social Skills Summer Program

At Successful Child, we understand that summer break can lead to a regression in social skills for some children, especially when opportunities for peer interaction are limited.
That’s why we’re offering a 12-week Social Skills Program designed specifically with neurodivergent learners in mind. Led by a Qualified Autism Service Practitioner, this program provides a supportive and inclusive environment where kids can build meaningful friendships, strengthen their social abilities, and grow in confidence with structured support.

Open to children ages 8 to 15—no diagnosis required.

What Kids Will Learn

  • Making and Keeping Friends:

Children will learn how to initiate friendships in natural, age-appropriate ways—through shared interests, play, and conversation. They'll explore what it means to be a good friend, including empathy, reciprocity, and reliability. We’ll also help them understand the dynamics of different types of friendships, how to navigate group settings, and how to maintain long-term social bonds through communication and mutual respect.

  • Starting and Maintaining Conversations:

This segment focuses on the basics of conversation—from how to say “hello” and ask questions, to how to stay on topic and recognize when it’s time to listen or speak. Through interactive role-play and real-time feedback, kids will practice turn-taking, active listening, and how to smoothly join or exit a conversation. They'll also gain confidence in adapting their language to different social contexts and audiences.

  • Understanding Social Cues and Body Language:

Kids will build awareness of nonverbal communication, including facial expressions, tone of voice, gestures, and personal space. They'll learn how to “read the room” and interpret what others might be feeling or thinking, even when it’s not said aloud. Activities will include visual games, story-based learning, and guided social observation to help children decode common social cues and respond appropriately.

  • Managing Emotions and Problem-Solving:

This part of the program helps children identify their own emotions, understand emotional triggers, and use healthy coping strategies when they're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or frustrated. They’ll also learn how to think through social problems—like misunderstandings or peer disagreements—using step-by-step techniques such as perspective-taking, compromise, and calm communication.

  • Understanding the Importance of Social Skills:

Children will gain a deeper understanding of the why behind essential social skills. Through role-playing, real-life examples, and structured activities, they’ll explore the importance of nonverbal cues like body language and eye contact, as well as verbal interactions such as reciprocating questions, sharing joint attention, and engaging in conversations—even when the topic isn't their personal favorite.

  • Flexibility and Adaptability:

Through cooperative gameplay and team-building activities, children will learn to navigate and embrace challenges such as losing a game, adapting to changes in routine, and working collaboratively with peers. They’ll also gain valuable experience in asking thoughtful questions, working toward shared goals, and celebrating the achievements of others.

Activities

Role-Playing Games

Children will engage in role-playing scenarios that mirror real-life social situations. These interactive activities help children practice social interactions in a safe, supportive environment. For example, they’ll practice introducing themselves, asking for help, or apologizing when they've made a mistake—building social confidence step by step.

Interactive Group Activities

Group exercises will include collaborative games and activities that encourage teamwork, sharing, and following social rules. These activities are designed to allow children to work together to solve problems, celebrate successes, and learn how to share experiences in group settings.

Ice Breakers

Each session will begin with kids asking and answering different ice-breaker questions such as "Would you rather...?". This will help break any tension and spark imagination and creative thinking, as well as giving kids common interests and shared topics to talk about. Fun ice-breaker questions will also lead to topics for collaborative conversations and foster deeper relationships between participants.

Parent Involvement

Parents will receive weekly handouts describing the skills worked on for that session, along with ‘homework’ for kids to practice generalizing skills learned at our program. Progress updates and data on skills used will be shared with parents throughout the duration of the program.
